Twin tower PSA nitrogen generators work by separating nitrogen molecules from other gasses, ensuring a steady supply of high-purity nitrogen. They pressurize one tower or the other with compressed air, usually around 110 psig / 7.6 barg. Each tower has its own bed of carbon molecular sieve (CMS).
The carbon molecular sieve has an important job in PSA systems, picking and holding onto certain gasses while letting others pass through. In the case of a nitrogen generator, it holds onto oxygen, while other gasses, mostly nitrogen, pass through.
When the adsorbent bed becomes saturated with the molecules it captured, the tower depressurizes to regenerate the bed. When the pressure is low enough, the sieve releases the trapped gas particles and gets ready for the next cycle. While this is happening, the other tower is pressurized and nitrogen is produced by the carbon molecular sieve there.
